Rise of women in Albanian Parliament

31/07/2013 00:00

After the Socialist Party leader, Edi Rama, announced the list of names
for the next government, 16 of the next Ministers will have to resign
from their mandate as Parliament Members, which will go to the next in
the list who hasn’t won.

The Electoral Code amends sanction that when a female Parliament Member resigns, she has to be replaced by someone of the same gender, regardless of the list.

The vacancies created by the Socialist Party Parliament Members are in Elbasan, Durres, Diber, Gjirokaster and Kukes, districts for which the Socialist Party has been fined for nhot respecting the gender quality, will be replaced by female candidates. The same thing happens with the Socialist Movement for Integration, the vacancies of which are created in Berat, Durres, Gjirokaster and Kukes.

This makes that 11 of the 16 new Parliament Members will be women, although most of them were placed on the end of the lists.

The biggest change will take place in Tirana,w here the Socialist Party has four Parliament Members who become ministers, allowing Enkelejda Shkreli, Bledar Doracaj, Ervin Bushati and Blerina Gjylameti become Parliament Members.

The Socialist Movement for Integration has Klajda Gjoshaj, the youngest Parliament Member of their list, becoming Minister of the Integration Ministry. She will leave a vacancy as Parliament Member for Kejdi Mehmetaj, who is only 20 years old. She had never believed that she would be elected, but now she will be the youngest Parliament Member in the Albanian Parliament.

Two mandates will be replaced in Fier, where Anduel Xhindi and Adelina Rista will be the newest Parliament Members of the Albanian Parliament. The same number of vacancies will be created in Gjirokaster, where Arben Ahmetaj and Erjon Veliaj leave their mandates to Vladimir Kosta and Dashamir Kamberi, although the Socialist Party has been fined in this district too for not having a female candidate.

The list of Parliament Members also changes in Elbasan, where Damian Gjiknuri leaves his mandate to Luljeta Arapi, while Edmond Haxhinasto of the Socialist Movement for Integration will be replaced by Miranda Rira.

Durres is another district with changes, where Ilir Beqja will be replaced by Esmeralda Shkjau, who is the last on the Durres list. Lefter Koka in Durres will leave a vacancy for the Socialist Movement for Integration to Silvana Maksuti, eighth on the list.

The new Socialist Party Parliament Member in Diber will be Ezmerina Hoxha. In Lezhe, Mimi Kodheli will leve her mandate to Mejreme Delishi, while the future Socialist Movement for Integration Parliament Member for Berat will be Silva Caka.
