Rights of disabled people

The EU Ambassador in Tirana, Ettore Sequi, made some remarks regarding
the respect of the rights of disabled people, not only for education,
but also for their employment.

“Albania must approve laws and legal laws for the rights of disabled people. Albania still has problems with the education and employment quota for the disabled people and anti discrimination laws should also be stronger. We believe that the right is not what is given, but something that no one should take. All countries that aspire to enter the EU must respect these rights, including Albania, which must respect these standards”, Sequi declared.

On the same discussion line was the Ombudsman, who promised to prepare a report regarding the respecting of the disabled people’s rights by the ALbanian institutions.

“I want to remind our most recent initiative to request information from public institutions regarding the implementation of law 7995 that encouraged employment for disabled people. This information will be part of a special report that the Ombudsman will plan for the disabled people”, Totozani declared.

The Chairman of the Disabled People Council, Sinan Tafaj, declared that the legislation needs amends, so that their rights can be respected same as in the other EU countries.

“Article 18 of the Constitution recognizes several groups that risk discrimination, but not the disabled people. We have reserves even for the antidiscrimination law. We have presented to our Justice Minister the request to include the Penal Code to the dispositions of the UN Convention, which require a special protection. We conceive our legal protection as included in the legislation, and which resolves problems of everyone, not just an integral law that creates legal ghettos for the disabled people”, Tafaj declared.

The EU Ambassador declared that they support policies which make Albania a country where everyone enjoy equal rights.
