Linda Rama: Between Family, Work and Albania’s Future “Repression!” This is the key word of the 2011-2012 report about media
freedom in the world, published by Reporters without Borders.
2011 was the year of revolts against the dictatorial regimes in North Africa and Middle East, but also the year of harsh threats and sanctions against the journalists.
In the international ranking, Albania holds the 96th position, that of a country with obvious problems, which is 16 places lower than 2010.
“The economic crisis has deepened the problems in Balkan. Justice with non-professional employees and who are allies of the government, often corrupted, has interest to oppress the media, rather then sentencing those who attack the journalists physically. This is the case of Bosnia and Herzegovina, ranked 58th, Montenegro ranked 107th, Albania 96th and Macedonia 94th”, the report says.
The situation seems improved for the rest of Europe, besides Italy, which has fallen from the 50th place to the 61st. This is related with the fall of the Silvio Berlusconi government and the mafia threats against 120 journalists.
On top of the list are countries like Finland, Norway and Netherlands. France is ranked 38th, Spain 39th. The US has also lost 20 places, ranking 47th, which is due to some serious episodes registered lately, especially for the digital information.
