Report on Albania says in 10 years 60,000 children have fled; Meta supports a parliamentary investigation

President Ilir Meta spoke today about his concern over the depopulation of Albania, as a recent report by the EUROSTAT agency says that over 60,000 children have left Albania and sought asylum in an EU country over the past 10 years.

According to Eurostat, over 82 percent of those children under the age of 14. Regarding the statistics, the head of state says: “I am deeply concerned about this mass departure of children from Albania, especially with the fact that their final destination is unclear.”

The President added that he supports the CRCA / ECPAT request for the establishment of a Parliamentary Inquiry Commission, with the opening of the new Assembly, to investigate the situation and whereabouts of the displaced children, to analyze the reasons and responsibilities and to recommend effective measures for a strategy to stop this dangerous phenomenon.

Meta added: “We must do every effort for Albanian children and youth, to protect their lives and health, to restore trust and guarantee opportunities so they feel fully realized, and confident they can build their secure European future in their homeland”.
