Regeneration of Forests

The financial bill for putting out the fires is lower than the one
needed for planting trees in a burned forest. Specialists say that one
hectare of burned forest requires 1000 to 1500 USD, while the planting
and regeneration will take decades.

Specialist Genti Kromidha explains that Albania has not had a decent forestation campaign in years, since the government budget can only afford the wages of forest employees.

“The government has not invested in forestation for years, not even in burned burned areas. The budget is too small, for not saying that is can only afford paying the wages of the remaining employees”, Kromidha declared.

The Forest Institution has no more seed plots, what increases the forestation cost of burned and cut areas. Specialists think that in a time of crisis, the natural assets are exploited barbarously by everyone and no one thinks about the damages.

“The cost of a decent and complete forestation would reach 1500 USD per hectare, depending on the value of the seeds. But our seed plots that could cut costs significantly have been destroyed in the last years. For all governments, forests have been seen as the only valve that could reduce poverty”, Kromidha declared.

The national assets were hardly hit during this year. Lura is burning down for another year, completely destroying one of the biggest natural beauties in Albania. The Bozhdovica Park in Korce and the Dajti Mountain in Tirana will need decades to regenerate and in some regions it is impossible to complete them.
