Italy will assist with vehicles and security experts even in the border
between Greece, Albania and Macedonia, while joint patrols have already
started at sea through the “Triton” operation.

“This decision was taken during a meeting between the Minister of Interior, Angelino Alfano, and the Albanian Minister, Saimir Tahiri. In an interview for Top Channel, Tahiri gave details about the decision.

“We agreed with Minister Alfano for the Albanian police to be assisted by the Italian authorities initially with infrastructure, in order to have better border control”, Tahiri declared.

The Albanian Minister of Interior said that everything is done to prevent terrorism and organized crime which might profit from the current situation.

“I underline that this has nothing to do with immigrants, but with safety, fight against organized crime, terrorism and one of the main aspects of risk, which is the influx of immigrants. We will continue to improve the police capacities to have complete control in the border with Greece and Macedonia. If there will be an influx of immigrants, we will take further measures.  This remains to be seen, because we cannot decide right now”, Tahiri underlined.

Other discussions involved the assistance of the Italian side for establishing identification and accommodation centers for immigrants in the Albanian territory, in case of a humanitarian crisis.
