The Customs Directory will start a gradual reduction of reference prices
that are used for the calculation of the business tax obligations.

In a question-answer session with the American Chamber of Commerce members, the Customs Director, Elisa Spiropali, declared that the final deadline for reducing the reference prices is January 2015.

“January 1st 2015 has been declared by the Minister of Finances. An entire year for dealing with the reference price issue, in cooperation with the United States of America and the European Union. The group is working intensively for making a reasonable reference price reduction. No one has ever spoken about a total elimination of this price”, declared Elisa Spiropali, Customs Director.

On the other hand, with the support of Crown Agents, they aim to reinforce the control for fighting smuggling and any legal violation.

“450 controls will be made each month to the customs administration and operators that are not regular, or that violate the law together with the administration”, Spiropali declared.

“If no violations will be found, we will make a risk analysis based on which we will operate further. During these inspections we will not inspect the legal merchants, so that we will not lose any precious time, but only those who violate the law”, declared Kevin Atkinson.

According to the Crown Agents representative, the new Customs Code that will be presented to the Ministry of Finances aims simplifying customs rules and procedures, which will make the customs administration work much easier.
