Reducing public spaces

Tirana’s new regulation plan foresees the replacement of current green spaces with constructions.

Reducing green spaces in Tirana, where the population and number of cars are growing, brings increased depression and other diseases for its citizens.

Leke Sokoli, a sociology expert, declared that by reducing these spaces we are damaging the psychological and physical life of humans.

“This causes physical, moral and psychological damage to individuals. People must have enough time to regenerate themselves physically, psychologically and intellectually. The lack of green spaces is a problem that accelerates degradation. We have conducted a study “poverty and children in Albania” and it shows that we are raising a generation that doesn’t know how to run, mainly due to the lack of public spaces”, Sokoli declared.

Environmentalist Zemir Dedej declared that the increased number of constructions has brought not only air pollution, but also a generation that doesn’t know how to run.

“If we keep this pace, we will have a city with too many constructions and few people who would want to live there. The entire system is a vicious circle. I don’t understand why there is constant demand to build upon green areas, when all state institutions and organizations know what kind of damage it causes to the people’s health, such as pollution from vehicles and the reduction of green areas that play a key role in clearing the air. The community is complaining for the fact that there are not enough spaces for the third generation, or where children can run”, Dedej declared.

Tirana is a capital with a growing population with less green space per capita. The civil society wants these European standards to be respected, since it changes the life quality of citizens.
