After the Greek consulate in Gjirokaster refused to accept new birth
certificates that do not show the nationality, the Red&Black
Alliance reacted by considering as illogical such an action against an
official document issued by the Albanian state.
“The Greek Consulate in Gjirokaster is conducting an unjust behavior by refusing the documents of Albanian institutions, and refusing to give any argument supporting this action. No EU country has nationality displayed on the certifications”, Endrit Shabani declared.
Representatives from this association said that the request of OMONIA for adding nationality on birth certificates is illegal and violates European standards.
“Albania respects human rights and minorities. The new birth certificates do not violate minority rights”, Shabani declared.
The declaration says that the Greek Consulate request is connected with the population registration process, by which the Greek government wants to artificially increase the population of the Greek minority in Albania. Meanwhile, official sources from the Registrar Office say that there is no change on procedures that require birth certificates. By user’s request, the nationality might be added at the back of the paper.
