
The International Court of War Crimes in Former Yugoslavia acquitted the
former KLA fighters (Kosovo Liberation Army), Ramush Haradinaj, Lahi
Brahimaj and Idriz Balaj for war crimes in 1998, arguing that the
Prosecution failed to bring convincing evidence.
Ramush Haradinaj was welcomed as a hero in Kosovo after the Court of Hague found innocent the former Prime Minister of Kosovo and the former Kosovo Liberation Army commander, and two of his fellow fighters.
He was welcomed at the Prishtina Airport by Prime Minister Thaci and the government officials.
“The Hague Verdict showed that the KLA war was right. Today was reconfirmed our trust in justice and the respect of the international standards”, declared the Prime Minister of Kosovo in a short speech for the media.
“I have lived with you and I enjoyed the victories of Kosovo, although I was far away. I am happy that the international community found that our path to freedom was right”, Haradinaj underlined.
Haradinaj, Brahimaj and Bala were tried for overseeing a campaign of torture and murder against Serbs and suspected collaborators in what was called the “Jablanica” military camp during the war in Kosovo, in 1998.
The family of the former Prime Minister of Kosovo in Gllogjan, Decan, was waiting for the verdict anxiously. Hilmi Haradinaj, the father of Ramush, couldn’t stop his tears of joy.
Several citizens visited the Haradinaj house to congratulate the family, while others welcomed the verdict with folk music and dances.
Other citizens gathered in the Decan city centre to celebrate, while the rest of Kosovo was waiting in front of the TVs.
Haradinaj’s acquaintance greeted
“The verdict of the Hague Court for Haradinaj, Balaj and Brahimaj is strong evidence that the Kosovo Liberation Army made its duty for freedom and didn’t commit crimes”, declared the officials in Prishtina after the verdict.
The Prime Minister of Kosovo, Hashim Thaci, declared that our patience and trust in the international justice was paid with a right and deserved verdict. He reiterated that their war for freedom and independence was a holy right, and that this will be also proven with Fatmir Limaj and his fighters.
The President of Kosovo, Atifete Jahjaga, expressed her pleasure that Haradinaj is turning to his family and the citizens of Kosovo to keep contributing in the consolidation of the democratic processes.
Other state leaders and AAK representatives greeted the verdict from the Ibrahim Rugova square, together with several citizens, where the trial was projected on a screen.
Berisha: Never doubted his innocence
The Albanian Prime Minister, Sali Berisha, greeted the verdict of Hague and declared that he never doubted on Haradinaj’s and KLA fighters’ innocence. Berisha added that this is good news for the Albanians in this special day, and a triumph of international justice.
Rama: The best news after 100th anniversary of independence
The Socialist leader, Edi Rama, greeted the verdict of the International Court in Hague that acquitted Haradinaj from all counts. Rama declared that this is a great news that comes after the 100th anniversary of independence, and a right decision against the malicious dirt thrown on KLA and their heroism.
