The Albanian Prime Minister, Edi Rama, will meet with the German Chancellor, Angela Merkel, during a two-day visit in Berlin. The meeting will focus on the positive expectancies for Albania’s EU accession negotiations.
On the second day Rama will visit the German Parliament, the institution that decides for Germany if they will open Albania’s accession negotiations.
A special detail about this meeting is that the Commission is led by Gunther Krichbaum, who has been mentioned in arguments between Rama and the opposition leader.
After Krichbaum said that Albania was not ready for accession negotiations, Basha accused Rama of funding a denigrating campaign against the German MP. The Prime Minister denied the accusations and said the SP would never attack any foreigner who has interest about Albania.
Krichbaum has caused several controversies in Albania’s politics. He holds important posts in the party of the German chancellor, and British media have called him “Merke’s attack dog”, since Brexit.
In Albania he has been called anti-Albanian, because he said that Albania’s request for accession negotiations is too early.
He was accused of being pro-Serb and with double standards, since Serbia has not started any judicial reform and yet he has no objections about Belgrade. He also threatened Croatia to not become an obstacle for Serbia.
Krichbaum has had so many pro-Russian declarations that he has been accused of being paid by Vladimir Putin.
Everything remains to be seen at the German Bundestag who will decide if they will allow Albania to start the EU accession negotiations.
