Rama: Law to limit freedomof defamation, not freedom of speech

18/12/2019 14:50

The Albanian Prime Minister, Edi Rama, reacted to the protest of some journalists against the anti-defamation law.

“The freedom of speech, the right to say whatever you want, first of all, is a responsibility. Those who published after the earthquake that the government was hiding 100 dead bodies to create chaos, with family members who couldn’t contact their loved ones… these are very recent cases. I’m not even talking about my family, my mother, my son, and other relatives. I’m talking on behalf of those who don’t have a microphone to give their side of the story, who don’t have our conditions. I’m talking on behalf of businessmen that are forced to pay outlets so that they can remove fake articles about the dangers of their products, with news articles damaging their business”, Rama declared.

“This is not a violation of the freedom of speech, but a limitation of the freedom to slander. When someone is showing people my palaces in Spain, either I should be removed from politics or the liars must be unmasked. Artur Zheji, for example, declared that our daughter was the lover of a Minister. Then he went to Court and lost the battle”, Rama said.
