The joint press conference of the Albanian and Serbian Prime Ministers
started with calm tones, with both PMs focusing on the European
perspective of both countries, their only point of agreement.
“Our children should not suffer because of the past between us. I see it as a real opportunity to establish the relations with Serbia”.
Vucic declared: “I am convinced that our problems can be resolved only through communication, and also about the significance of our EU integration”.
But the calm situation didn’t last long. Rama mentioned in his declaration that independent Kosovo is a fact.
“We have different stances about Kosovo, but the reality is one and unchangeable. Kosovo is independent and recognized by 108 countries, and supported by the verdict of the International Court of Justice. This is an unchangeable and undeniable reality in our region and in Europe. It should be respected and become part of the European and Atlantic integration, and as I underlined in the last NATO summit, I want to reiterate once again and sincerely that the recognition of Kosovo by the European countries is a matter of European security”, Rama declared.
When Rama started talking about Kosovo, Vucic removed the headphones to not continue hearing the declaration, which he considered a provocation.
“I didn’t expect provocations from Mr.Rama, and I didn’t expect to talk about Kosovo and Metohija today. I will not allow anyone to humiliate Serbia in Belgrade. Kosovo is part of Serbia, and has never had anything to do with Albania. I am sorry that Mr.Rama made use of this occasion to talk about this topic, although we haven’t agreed about it”, Vucic declared.
Rama answered to this declaration: “Alexandar, I guarantee you that in Tirana we will not feel provoked if you have the same stance about Kosovo. We will simply feel sorry about it, because it is a reality known by more than half of the UN countries, a reality that the faster Is recognized, the faster we can progress in all directions. The hospitality will not only be mutual, but I guarantee that your words will not be seen as a provocation in Tirana, even if they are not what we expect about any topic”.
Before Kosovo, Rama mentioned the rights of the Albanians in the Presheva Valley.
“I believe that the new generation that rules Serbia today will see and respect the Presheva Valley Albanians as an important strategic bridge for our European fates. Having them have all rights foreseen by the European and International Convention is not only a desire, but it is also our Constitutional obligation. We want the Albanians of the Presheva Valley to enjoy the full attention of official Belgrade for their representation in the local and central structures, and also for their economic and social development. I believe that the Serbian authorities know that the Albanians of Presheva are involved and encourage the European integration processes of Serbia”, Rama declared.
“As for the declarations of Rahmi Mustafa and Januz Musliu, I will not comment those declarations. As regards the territorial integrity of Serbia, it will not be touched by anyone. It is up to us to respect these people, see what our mistakes might be with building schools and hospitals, and what we can do for our citizens”, Vucic declared.
