Rama: “Education reform, autonomy of universities, no influence from government”

The Albanian Prime Minister, Edi Rama, declared this Tuesday that his
government will not make any intervention in the academic world, based
on the higher-education reform.

Rama underlined that the internal issues of the university will be a responsibility of the rector and of the academic staff.

“We have made a reform of higher education, which guarantees autonomy. But the autonomy also gives more responsibility. The government will fund what is seen from the outside, the rector with his autonomy, whatever is seen from the inside. I say this for students. I will react if I don’t like something from outside, but for things from the inside you will have to address the rector”, Rama declared.

The Prime Minister said that this is an important moment of the higher education path. He underlined that if the reform had no one against it, it would be no reform.

“It had less opposition than it should. What we achieved is that the university will not be anymore in the interim phase, simply as a shelter for youth, without offering any other alternative”, Rama said.

Rama mentioned the elections that will be held at the Tirana University and faculties, denying any involvement of the government and the Socialist Party in the election of candidates.
