Rama: DP, no will for electoral reform

The Socialist leader, Edi Rama, declared in an interview for Radio Free
Europe that the stance of the two biggest political parties in Albania,
regarding the electoral reform, is completely different.

Rama confirmed his stance against a possible alliance with the Socialist Movement for Integration, and warned that the “Seseri” issue could damage the entire progress created after the political debate returned in Parliament.

Another important point in which the Socialist leader focused during the interview was the Presidential election, for which he reiterated the already known stance of the Socialist Party for finding a consensual president that should be above the parties.

The electoral reform – “The electoral reform is one of the 12 key priorities for the candidate status, but unfortunately, we have still many differences with the Democratic party about the way how this reform should be realized”, Rama declared.

“We want to improve the electoral system in order to increase transparency and have secure the representation of all voters through all electoral subjects, while the other party is completely closed on this point. I hope that the debate will not be postponed, because it is essential for the electoral reform to conclude as soon as possible, in order to include technology in the voting process, such as for the identification or electronic ballot counting”.

Relations with the SMI – Asked about any possible alliance with the Socialist Movement for Integration in the elections of 2013, Rama gave a categorical stances: “SMI is part of the governing coalition and we see no difference in this party that can make us think of any other scenario, besides taking more than 71 votes from the Albanian people through free and honest elections”, Rama declared.

According to Rama, “the Albanians will have two programs in the next Parliamentary elections, one that offers a national rebirth and one that offers further destruction, offered by the governing coalition in which the SMI is included”.

President – Although the Constitution doesn’t oblige the majority to ask for the opposition’s support, if they will have the necessary 71 votes, Rama declared that it is on the country’s own good to implement the constitutional spirit that defines the Head of the State as a “unity symbol”.

“This is the main criteria for the President, so that he can be above the parties and represent the national unity. If he will be elected by the majority, then the President will not be able to represent the entire nation, because he will be with one single party”.

Seseri Case – In the interview for Free Europe, Rama mentioned the most important issue of the moment, that of the Socialist seat abandoned by MP Rudina Seseri. Rama declared that the debate with the majority on this issue must be taken very seriously.

“The opposition has no reason why to address to the court, because it is a constitutional and legal obligation when an MP abandons the seat to replace him automatically. This is an essential matter that undermines democracy in the country”, Rama underlined.
