Linda Rama: Between Family, Work and Albania’s Future The opposition leader, Edi Rama, warned that Albania is facing a
financial storm. After meeting in Brussels the leader of the European
left wing group, Martin Schultz, Rama accused the government of denying
the crisis.
“We are convinced that Albania is facing a financial storm, which the government not only has done nothing to avoid, but by hiding the crisis, have made this storm even more unavoidable. We are still in time for reducing its effects, but if the government will continue to deny the crisis, the storm will be much heavier and unfortunately, the one who will pay are those who have less money and to whom the government will ask more taxes then those who have more money and pay more taxes”, Rama declared.
Schultz declared that the economic crisis and the following problems were one of the discussion points.
“It is logical that Albania has been touched by the negative economic developments throughout Europe and the transparency for the budget is a precondition for democracy. The tax payerss money make the budget base, and for the spending of the people’s money is needed maximal transparency and sincerity. For responding to your question more directly, transparency is a key element of democracy and a responsibility of the state institutions towards the Parliament, through the Parliament members, the voters and what makes the foundations of democracy”.
The latest political developments in the country were the focus of the conversation with the left centered MPs and the General Secretary of the Socialist International, Luis Ayala.
“We discussed about the situation in Albania, the relations of our Parliamentary group with the Albanian socialists. We had an intensive exchange of opinions about the next steps that will be taken for pushing this relation further. The colleagues of our group will visit Albania next week. I was satisfied from the meeting with Edi Rama. It was a long time since we last met, and I think it was in Strasbourg. Now we are in Brussels, these two countries of the European policy, now that Albania is approaching to Europe”, Schultz declared.
On his behalf, Rama declared that the conversation was about the support that the SP asked from the European Parliament, the Socialist Parliamentary group for the Parliamentary reform, the reforming process and the monitoring of Europe and the European Parliament that must return into an implemented process, so that the things of the past will not be repeated in the future.
The General Secretary of the Socialist International, Luis Ayala, declared that the best road for Albania is that of reforms, so that the Albanians are guaranteed that they live in a true democracy and that they will have honest and free elections.
“We are committed and support the agenda of the Socialist party, their position for efficient negotiations that would bring results. We trust and we have reasons to trust the Socialist Party of Albania. We know that this party and Edi Rama are committed to push this agenda forward, with the amends and the electoral reform, which is key for Albania. What we have seen in the past, cannot be repeated any more. Now I want to see if the others are really committed for this. I think that it is key for Albania and its political actors and all institutions to go forward with this agenda, because as I said, Europe and Albania could now allow such a thing, and the Albanians are the ones who would suffer the consequences if these politicians are not able to push this agenda forward.”
