Race for CEC

03/10/2012 00:00

The consensus at the Commission of Laws didn’t last more than 24 hours.
Their candidacies for the Central Election Commission (CEC) Chairman
brought new clashes between the parties.

After a long hearing session of the 16 applicants that were presented in the Commission for the CEC Chairman, each of the MPs voted for the preferred candidates.

The vote of the right winged MPs, which determined this process, elected four names: Marsida Xhaferrlari, Lefteri Lleshi, Endrit Reka and Haki Mustafa.

But the opposition said that two of the other four candidates, Reka and Mustafa, should be disqualified from the race because they don’t fulfill one of the criteria demanded by the law: being a member of the Democratic Party and currently Head of Municipal Unit 11, and the second doesn’t have the 5 year experience in the public administration.

But the opposition’s request was read by the majority as an effort to block the process.

“You can block this if you want. We will wait October 10th, that’s what your problem is”, declared the Chairman of the Commission, Ilir Rusmali.

“We are here to make a normal process, to respect the law. We cannot have as candidates two people who do not fulfill the criteria”, replied the Socialist vice Chairman of the Commission, Fatmir Xhafaj.

The meeting was interrupted and the last two candidates could not be voted for the session that was to bring the new CEC Chairman.

The vacancy brought a relatively high number of candidates today, 16 out of 18 that had applied.

Kristaq Kume was the only one having a rerun. While most of the promises were concrete, some other also caused humor.
