Qafe Gjashta massacre, one defendant released

The Court of Appeal rejected the decision of the First Degree Court of
Serious Crimes, for one of the persons accused for the Qafe-Gjashta
massacre, Edmond Cipa.
During this decision, the Court of Appeal rejected the sentence of 15 years to prison for Cipa for lack of evidence, and ordered the defendant to be freed.
The Appeal left in act the sentences for nine other defendants, who were sentenced in total with 131 years to prison.
On 4 March 1997, the Police agent Gjergj Mehmeti was killed in Saranda and the other agent, Eduard Alia, was taken hostage. The agents were sent by the Vlore Police to take the Saranda Police Station under the control, after the 1997 turmoil of the Ponzi Schemes scandals.
