In the summer of 1986, right after finishing the “Palace of Congresses”,
the architect Vladimir Bregu, together with three other architects,
started the project of the Pyramid.
Today, after 25 years, he expresses his astonishment for the fact that this building was sentenced to death and has turned into a great political dispute.
“I cannot understand, cannot believe how could someone demolish such an object, which required a lot of work and has great historical and financial values. It is one of the most achieved constructions in Albania. It has a totally modern expression, and it is an object that has been discussed and experimented for the first time. Even if it will be demolished, its history will remain. Maybe exactly the demolishing will make it a legend”, Bregu declared.
For the architect Bregu, there are all the possibilities for reconstructing the pyramid, for which he has projected many variants that no one has accepted to watch or take in consideration.
“There are many solutions. I was at the first project of the Parliament, and when we visited the Pyramid with the German architects, that said that we could built the Parliament right there, because that building had a special symbolism. We have sketched many ideas, but cannot show them. That could become a Parliamentary building, without touching it at all”, Bregu underlined.
Mr. Bregu expressed a series of objections against the winning project for the new Parliament, which, according to him, is not a unique building in its gender.
“I know that these architects have taken the duty to study the Pyramid, or maybe they have seen it as an empty space. It is far from a solution and far from the importance aspect. The project is not unique. It is unique for the architects that created it, but it is far from the current Pyramid”, the architect adds.
As for the construction cost, the architect Bregu thinks that it is at least five times more expensive than the cost of the projects that were presented in the first competition.
“In the first competition, we were at the project of one of the winning studios, and we were asked to not exceed 20 million EUR. When I saw this object, with the metal windows panels three times more expensive, I was astonished. The cost of this project has gone to 120 million EUR”, Bregu added.
