Linda Rama: Between Family, Work and Albania’s Future 17 women have suffered extreme physical violence from their husbands in
the first 10 months of this year. Only on November 20th, two women were
killed over jealousy.
The 56-year-old Resmie Myrteli was hit with wooden objects, while the 48-year-old Arjana Serjani, mother of three, was killed with a shot gun.
The network of Civil Society organizations protested in front of the Prime Ministry and asked the Albanian state to take severe measures towards the authors of the crimes.
“Two horrible murders took place this weekend, and the number of killed women from domestic violence has increased. Although the laws are there, they are still far from being implemented”, declared Fabiola Egro, director of the “Useful to Albanian Women” association.
The Constitutionalist Aurela Anastasi declared that the Code of Penal Procedure must change, so that the state can be able to prosecute authors of domestic violence.
“We will ask the prosecution to follow this crimes not only based on the victim’s report. This means that we must have a kind of public report, granted by the Penal Code, providing that even if the victim withdraws the report, the Prosecution will continue its job by not allowing domestic violence to continue, and to stop considering this crime as the current Code does, as a mitigating circumstance. This should not be allowed anymore”, Anastasi declared.
In this protest was demanded the change of the Penal Code for punishing the systematic domestic violence against women. An important point remains the legal measures against family violence.
