Linda Rama: Between Family, Work and Albania’s Future
The vice director of Public Safety at the Tirana Police, Erzen Brecani,
has been suspended today from his duty. He is the author of the violence
that was used against Top Channel’s cameraman in the premises of Police
District 1 in Tirana, after the Tirana-Skenderbeu match.
The news for his suspension was taken by the General Police Director one day after the Police declared that they would take no measures about this incident.
Media employees had announced a protest in front of the Ministry, in which they will ask the government to take measures and make the officer accountable.
The position held by the Tirana Police was more than shameful, with them denying any responsibility and by justifying violence. Everyone tomorrow can fall prey to the arrogance and abuse. Not just a journalist, but every citizen of this country who hopes to see security from the uniform, not abuses.
“We will protest tomorrow for the dignity of every Albanian, because the state police, and especially Erzen Brecani, has abused with a group of citizens, with Top Channel’s operator among them. The Albanian media have the duty to report events, and cameramen already face difficulties in such situations, because they have be present and exposed to the bad behaviour. The state is responsible because they have beaten a cameraman for doing his job. Tomorrow we will hold a protest. The Police cannot stop us from telling the truth”, declared Gjergj Erebara.
The State Police refused to allow the protest for tomorrow, but according to the law, a notification is sufficient.
The police was completely indifferent to the case when a cameraman was beaten, and since this protest goes beyond the solidarity to their colleague, the media people appeal all citizens to support them, so that abusers can be held accountable when they abuse with any Albanian citizen, regardless the power given to them by their titles.
