Protest against police brutality

10/04/2013 00:00

Journalists from all media outlets, analysts, leaders of NGOs, MPs and
common citizens protested today in front of the Prime Minister’s office
after the vice Director of the Tirana Police, Erzen Brecani, used
violence against Top Channel’s cameraman, Gent Ballta.

Brecani, now suspended, was present on site and shook hands with the journalists and cameramen, probably as a sign of apology or even intimidation.

The media people condemned today the violence used against their colleague of Top Channel, who rather than defending journalists, has attacked them.

Aleksander Cipa, head of the Journalist Union, declared that no government official should dare using violence against journalists, who are on their mission to inform the public opinion.

“The Journalist Union supports all the colleagues who are looking for help in the mission of discovering the truth”, Cipa declared.

The position held by the Tirana Police was shameful. They denied everything and even justified the violence against Top Channel’s cameraman. Tomorrow, anyone can fall prey to the arrogance and abuse, not only journalists, but every common citizen of this country, rather than seeing security and hope from the Police.

Protest against police violence, Brecani suspended

The vice director of Public Safety at the Tirana Police, Erzen Brecani, has been suspended from his duty. He is the author of the violence that was used against Top Channel’s cameraman in the premises of Police District 1 in Tirana, after the Tirana-Skenderbeu match.

Spokesperson Laura Totraku declared that the General Police Director, Hysni Burgaj, has suspended Erzen Brecani from his duty after the case reported by Top Channel, and the disciplinary procedures are undergoing.

This measure came after the public and media pressure, because the Police stayed silent in the beginning and reacted by saying that no measures would be taken.

Top Channel addressed a letter to the Interior Minister, Flamur Noka, expressing their protest about the violence used inside the Tirana Police District nr.1.
