10 years from the Gerdec tragedy, the explosion that destroyed an entire village and killed 26 people, the victims’ relatives are still seeking justice, while 28 defendants are still free.
The Prosecution could not find enough evidence for the former Defense Minister, Fatmir Mediu. The former Minister resigned immediately and was questioned by Prosecutors after being stripped off his immunity. Mediu is now MP of the Albanian Parliament.
The Ministry he was leading had permitted the Alba Demil company to dismantle the weapons. The company was led by Mihal Delijorgji and Dritan Minxolli.
Delijorgji is currently working with construction. Ylli Pinari, the former leader of the MEIKO company, (state owned), and also the military leaders that were in charge.
The only one who hasn’t served his sentence is Luan Hoxha, still on the run.
The name of Shkelzen Berisha, the son of the former Prime Minister, was mentioned regarding the event. But there was no criminal lawsuit against him. The political accusations against him and the former Prime Minister are still ongoing.
Businessman Kosta Trebicka, the whistleblower who spoke up after the tragedy, lost his life in a hunting accident. Two US citizens, Efraim Diveroli and his partner, David Pakous, have both gained their freedom. Their story was mentioned in the “War Dogs” movie.
