Linda Rama: Between Family, Work and Albania’s Future The nine Metrology Directory employees that were arrested yesterday
received the Court’s decisions for their arrest. The fraud with
the weight of various market goods was publicly reported by Top
Channel, but no investigations were ever undertaken.
The denouncement focused on the theft that is made to the Albanian consumers with the weight of the goods they buy, not only with fuels, but also with daily foods.
The operation that the police performed yesterday came after a denouncement of this Directory, because the inspectors were not bringing the necessary revenues. The Police surveillance resulted that the inspectors cooperated with the subjects they had to inspect.
The Prosecution has officially left open these two subjects, declaring that if proved that the producers stole with the inspectors’ awareness, all of them would be trialed. For the moment, they are being trialed for fictive inspections.
The inspectors’ report says that the weight is normal, without inspecting it at all. The implication of the businessmen, although they are not the plaintiffs, is up to the people who have been arrested.
The biggest problem in this story is that even after many reports made in the media, there has never been an investigation for the theft made to the consumers.
Fuels, 9 officials arrested
At least 14 officials of the Metrology Directory were taken under police custody after an order released by the Task Force Unit.
The officials were under surveillance for three months, and investigations showed that they have taken money in exchange of allowing business subjects to sell their products without undergoing inspections as the law provides.
Tirana Police have not made any announcement, because the operation is undergoing and they are looking for other people. Unofficial sources say that nine of the people were taken by police with an arrest order, while the others are just for being interrogated.
Among the arrested is the vice Director General of this service, the Director of Metrology, the Director of Tirana’s Branch of Metrology, and other inspectors.
Police took under custody more than 10% of the total employees of the General Directory of Metrology, which insinuates that the corruption has started from the higher ranks to the basic inspectors.
The recorded phone conversations have verified that the directors gave orders to their dependents for making inspections and release the results without making the necessary measures. Police did not tell if the business subjects will also be prosecuted for offering money to avoid technical inspection.
