Today in Himara in the southern Albanian coast, a protest was held for the release from prison of the elected mayor Fredi Beleri.
The rally is being held outside the office of the Omonia pro-Greek association, on the promenade of Spile, where protesters demanded the immediate release of Beleri from prison.
In today’s protest, the main speaker is expected to be the mayor of Athens, Kostas Bakojanis.
Although Athens has been consistent in its political stance on the Beleri issue, this is the first time a mayor has openly intervened in Greece’s foreign policy issues.
Bakojanis is the son of former foreign minister Dora Bakojani and at the same time, grandson of current Prime Minister, Qyriakos Mitsotakis.
Three mayors of Athens, Thessaloniki and Corfu are present at the protest.
Greece has demanded the release of Fredi Beleri after his arrest for election crimes, while it has often issued threatening tones towards Albania with the argument that the minority rights are being violated.
