Prishtine, Limaj under arrest

Fatmir Limaj, known during the Kosovo war as “Commander of Steel”, and
three former KLA members (Kosovo Liberation Army”, Naser Krasniqi,
Neshmi Krasniqi and Naser Shala, will stay under police custody for one
month, as ruled by an EULEX judge at the Supreme Court, after reviewing
the request of EULEX Prosecutor, Maurizio Sasustro.

The decision was taken after 23:00 on Saturday, and is related with the Klecka case, which was returned for review by the Supreme Court.

The Prosecutor made the request based on the argument that the defendants could evade the country.

Limaj’s lawyer, Tahir Rrecaj, declared that he is surprised with the decision, since Limaj had just returned from Albania, after he was declared Citizen of Honour in Vlore, and there is no reason to think that he will not be present and turn his back to Kosovo.

Mahmut Halimi, defensive lawyer of Nexhmi Krasniqi, declared for the media that this decision is biased and it might have a direct political effect, since the Chief of EULEX, Xavier De Marnhac, was in Belgrade during this time and gave no reason for the goal of his visit. “He must explain to the people of Kosovo for the reason he was there, and why the trial was set immediately. I have clients who are waiting for years, and this case had a much accelerated procedure”.

Fatmir Limaj, MP of the Democratic Party of Kosovo, and the other three defendants, appeared at the Supreme Court this Saturday afternoon and their relatives and friends waited for the court verdict for more than seven hours.

The defensive lawyers declared that they will appeal the decision this Monday.
