Linda Rama: Between Family, Work and Albania’s Future On the last day of his presidential mandate, and before handing it over
to his successor, Bujar Nishani, President Bamir Topi addressed a
message to all Albanians. Topi says that he has tried to keep the
promise for being president of all Albanians and for acting with honesty
for civil values.
“During my mandate I faced great expectances from the public, with various requests and often contradictory; with just and unjust critics; defaming campaigns and partial labeling. With conscience I chose to leave behind the formal conflict models and listen to and treat with the greatest seriousness all thoughts, requests and rational critics, offering a constitutional solution for everything that has a civil and public interest. I am deeply convinced that many things could have been better if lawmaking politics would use its big power in a constructive and institutional way, if its interests would find more accordance with your civil interests, and if our political class would show more maturity, responsibility and ability to bring the promised changes. Albania of 2012 deserved more progress and European values, and I have the conviction that I found the support of the majority of the citizens”, Topi declared.
“In the end of the Constitutional mandate, allow me to say that I am proud that I had the chance to represent you; that on your behalf I represented Albania in the historical NATO membership event; that my presidency was and remains a tolerant presidency with a tolerant and all inclusive behavior; an institution that brought no conflicts, but resolved them; an institution that had no partial policy, but a decisive institutional behavior, from which no citizen felt offended, excluded or forgotten, but everyone found an opened door for their concerns, their thoughts and the great need of cooperation on behalf of the national public interests”, he added.
“I wish success and good luck to the next President, and I invite all citizens and political actors of other institutions to support his will for fulfilling the constitutional duties. Albania needs democratic stability, unity and to leave behind the exclusive politics. Albania needs dialogue, cooperation, reforms and to strengthen the constitutional institutions. Albania needs mild and civil policies in this path. Albania needs the contribution of everyone for more well-being and qualitative and functional democracy. Aware of these democratic needs and values, I fully support the democratic rotation, the new energies in the head of the state, in institutions and political parties. Albania and their citizens deserve better”, Topi declared.
The President closed his message by saying that the political posts come and go, but the citizens and the state, their public and national interests are still there as the biggest asset, as the biggest inspirational source, the biggest reason to understand the service as a privilege.
