Through a public message, the Albanian President, Bamir Topi, gave a
congratulatory message for December 8th, the National Day of Youth.

The head of the Albanian State says that 21 years ago, the students of the Tirana University started the political protests for overthrowing the dictatorial system. They came from different cities and different family experiences, but all they had in common was the vision and the ideal for a different Albania, a free, democratic and European country. They dared and vanquished fear with a wide intellectual and civil support, with which they obliged the regime to accept political pluralism.

According to the President, the Student’s Movement of December 1990 is one of the culminating moments in the history of Albania.

“Never before have we had such an elite movement, with a high civil sense and responsibility to the country’s fate. This generation had the courage to oppose one of the most Stalinist regimes in Europe; had the wisdom to unfold a program of democratic and European political requests; had the ability to administer the most precious contributes of the liberal and intellectual way thinking for the time. Our honor goes to the students that changed the history of their families and Albania. A special honor goes for Azem hajdari, the leading student of the Student Movement. For Arben Broci and other representing names of this movement, who died for defending the political principles that they raised in December 1990”, the Presidential message declared.

The Albanian President declared that the democracy would have even a more positive balance, if the Albanian political class would have followed the same ideals and principles of the Student’s Movement 1990.
