The Albanian and the Serbian presidents met during the ninth UNESCO summit with the Presidents of Southeastern Europe.

In an interview for Top-Channel, President Bamir Topi declared that the relations with Serbia are a priority of special regional significance for Albania, which aims to build good and constructive relations in the mutual interest of both countries.

“This is my first visit in Serbia, and it was for the regional meeting of the Southeastern Europe Presidents, organized by UNESCO, the Council of Europe and the European Union. As it was seen by the meetings with the other presidents, we treated here the need of politics to learn from the tradition of the people. I also had a meeting with President Tadic and we discussed very important matters regarding bilateral relations between Albania and Serbia. It is a meeting that I consider as very important and welcomed, because Albania and Serbia are two very important countries in the region, and they need to improve their relations, to increase institutional cooperation and economic relations, and to free themselves from prejudices that belong to the future, in order to enable the regional countries to lead a calm life”, Topi declared.

As for Kosovo, Topi declared that the matter of the status and its borders is definitely closed.

“We also treated matters that belong to Kosovo. My stance is already known, same as the stances of the Albanian institutions. The reality of Kosovo is irreversible, is a country that will treat the technical problems with Serbia under the supervision of the European Union. These technical problems derive from the clear positions of two independent and sovereign countries. There’s no doubt that the stance of President Tadic is different, but I believe that the further recognitions that will come from other countries will make Kosovo a country whose future is the same as all countries of the region, the irreversible road towards EU”, Topi emphasized.
