Linda Rama: Between Family, Work and Albania’s Future A few days after the official opening of the Parliamentary procedures
for the election of the new President, the foreign diplomats in Tirana
suggested his election through qualified majority in the first round.
According to the Dutch ambassador, this means that this president would represent the people’s unity.
“As regards the presidential election, the first round is on May 24th. You know which are the requirements: a candidate that has the support of 20 Parliament members, and in principle there can be seven candidates. As far as I know, there are one or two candidacies and we don’t know if they have the support of the Parliament. It is important to find a president that represents the unity of the Albanian people and the Albanian nation. The Constitution prefers a consensual president, and this is evident. I wish that the presidential elections will serve to join the parties. The president’s position in Albania is political. The president should be a symbol of unity. The entire parliamentary process should prove this. Another fact is that the European Union is interested about this. Everyone has said, including Fule, that the presidential election process is very important for Albania’s integration possibilities. He said that the necessary steps of teh electoral and parliamentary reform will end before the presidential election will start”, declared the Dutch Ambassador in Tirana, Henk van Den Dool.
