President: Political climate, sadness

The Albanian President, Bamir Topi, in an interview for Top Channel’s
program “Top Story” underlined that the political situation in our
country “fills you with sadness”.

“This political climate fills you with sadness and is crossing every absurd limit. We are facing a clash of the politicians’ ego. The Albanian opinion is very disappointed today. Today’s politics is not civil, it is without ethics. All you hear are insults that do not spare even family members. The politicians must understand that they are not up there only for themselves”, the President declared.

This situation, according to Topi, is caused by the constitutional amends:

“The Constitutional amends were a quick action. The amends were made within a single night. Today we have Edi Rama, a politician who is repented. We have a troubled climate that comes from the high tensions that derived from these changes, and this also brought critics from the EU community,” Topi added.

“The way the Central Election Commission is structured shows that it is controlled by the politics, and also the great diligence of the big political parties for monitoring the CEC structures. It is time to address to models used by the democratic Europe”, the President added, regarding the local elections.

As for the controversy about his vote that was revealed by CEC members, during the local elections, Topi declared:

“By touching the vote of the President, they showed that the vote of the citizens is not protected. I didn’t want to make a public cause about what is personal, and vote is personal”.

Constitutional Amends

“I will not be part of the public debate for the Constitutional amends. It is no taboo if the political parties, institutions and international friends think that something must change. I think it might change. However, I have considered it an exclusivity of the political parties. There is another mechanism, that of the referendum. But it seems that the political parties don’t like it. There have been a series of occasions when the referendum has not been taken in consideration”, Topi declared.

President’s election by the people

“I am in contact, and the model of the President Fisher is not the only one. There are other cases when the President is elected by the people. The more the political terrain is polarized, the more I support the variant that elects the President by the people, although it is not up to me. But to be direct with the public communication, this model is the best and the most democratic. And this has nothing to do with the competences.  The Macedonian President has less competences and he is elected by the people”, Topi declared.

“I don’t want to make this conversation hypothetically. I am part of the politics, and every political challenge is acceptable for me. Every decision is taken in function of the time. As long as things are hypothetical, I wouldn’t want to comment and allow someone call these comments quixotic”, Topi declared.

“Many politicians have shown their desire to minimize the President’s role. There have been propositions even by minor MPs, which have been ridiculous. This means that these MPs either have entered politics by chance, or they have a grudge that makes them undertake such actions”, Topi declared.
