“President”, Nano meets Meta

As warned one day ago on Top Channel’s program, Top Story, where he declared his ambition to run for president, the former Socialist leader and former Prime Minister, Fatos Nano, started presenting his platform to all Parliamenatry parties.

Nano and the Socialist Movement for Integration leader, Ilir Meta, had an unofficial meeting in a Tirana bar, where they have also discussed about the next President and Nano’s platform, according to sources.

After the meeting, Nano declared that he is reviewing with Meta all possibilities for his candidacy, which, according to him, aims the professionalism of the Albanian politics, in order to implement the integration priorities.

“We are identifying with maturity the opportunities for building a consensual process that would be in full accordance with the EU integration, with the 100th anniversary of independence and the need for which we agreed with Mr. Meta, for a better politics that will serve to the realization of these priorities”, Nano declared.

Promising to continue the transparency of this process, the former Prime Minister invited the media to be patient for such an important and complex matter.

Asked by the media about Berisha’s declaration for his possible candidacy for President, Nano ironized saying:

“The Prime Minister did a good thing by not postponing his agenda for cleaning Albania from pollution, and I believe to not be part of this pollution”.

He added that the meeting with the Socialist leader, Edi Rama, could be held next week, while the meeting with the Prime Minister has not been set yet.

As regards the cooperation with Ilir Meta, with whom he had the worst relations when in power, Nano declared:

“Meta’s party is the Socialist Movement for Integration and I have to move with integration’s steps”.

Meta declared for the media that more important than who will be president, is the political climate that must be cleaned.

“Nano’s candidacy for President is a contribution of the Integration Process. The President’s election must factorize Albania and not the individual for the subject”, Meta declared.

Nano is expected to have an official meeting at the SMI headquarter, after this first meeting with a political leader of Parliamentary parties.

Berisha reacts about Nano’s ambitions for President

Sali Berisha might meet Fatos Nano for listening to his Presidential platform, while the historical leader of the Socialist Party will attempt gathering support from the main political actors for a consensual candidacy.

But Berisha is not ready to accept Fatos Nano as a consensual candidate. Asked by the journalists, the Prime Minister made clear that the Democratic Party will have its own candidate who will be chosen by the majority.

“I made my comments and the candidate will be a Democratic Party personality”, Berisha declared.

If there will be no consensus, if one Presidential candidate will not be able to secure 84 votes and the first three rounds of the Presidential election will end without success, the voting will be closed, even if no candidate will be present in the race.

Without consensus, the entire battle between the candidates for President will go to the two final rounds.

The amends made to the Constitution 4 years ago show that the President will be elected with at least 71 votes, which is the magical number for not bringing the country to new elections.
