President Meta to EU ambassadors: Parliament to withdraw from the unilateral amendment of the Constitution

Today President Ilir Meta held a meeting with the ambassadors of EU countries in Albania, to whom a document was presented in which he raised the alarm that the constitutional changes are being carried out unilaterally.

“I welcomed the vote in parliament on the June 5 agreement. The current Parliament should refrain from any attempt to unilaterally approve the changes at the constitutional level. This parliament does not enjoy political legitimacy. Most importantly, this parliament with only 122 deputies does not have the necessary constitutional quorum of 140 deputies. The quick approval of constitutional changes without having a complete process undermines the constitutional order, stability and democratic representation,” the document reads.

President Ilir Meta has given another argument on why, according to him, it is not the moment to intervene in the cornerstone of the state.

“A considerable number of European constitutions have prohibitions regarding the time the constitution is interfered with, such as during wartime, emergencies or similar situations. ”
The Albanian constitution explicitly prohibits constitutional changes during emergency measures.
