President: I was on the boulevard, Berisha in the “Block”

This was the first answer, but an explosive one, of the Albanian President, Bamir Topi, eight months after the public personal offence that the Prime Minister, Sali Berisha, addressed to him after the January 21st events.

In an emotional and explosive interview on Top Channel’s program “Top Story”, but also politically eloquent, the Head of the Albanian State declared that he will return next year in politics with a right wing political party.

The President directly challenged Berisha, warning him for a movement of MPs in the Parliament, if there would be a Presidential election with 71 votes out of 140. He invited the political parties to accept that the best solution was to have a President directly elected by the people.

The President commented Berisha’s offensive words towards him and considered them as showing lack of civil ethics.

During the interview, Topi confirmed what was said on the Wikileaks cable, that Berisha was planning an attack with stones against the Presidential Building, when the Parliament was discussing the “lustration” law. It was true, because this information had come from the secret services.

But the most interesting part of the interview was when the President answered to the question if he would enter politics next year. The President declared that he would be active in politics and that he belonged to the Albanian right centered parties, due to his conviction and family origin. Topi declared that the battle for the next President was still open.

He insisted that Albania needs a President chosen by the people. Topi did not exclude his candidacy, in case this would be made possible, but he insinuated that if the Parliament would end up to elect the President with 71 votes, there would be movement of the Democratic Party MPs, who would act as a blocking minority.

Topi blamed the Constitutional amends for the current political situation in the country, for which he said that at least there is someone who is repented.
“Rama is repented, but not the other part”, Topi declared.
