Linda Rama: Between Family, Work and Albania’s Future The first Parliamentary session for the presidential election failed
after no candidate appeared for the voting. The candidacy of the
Constitutional Court Judge, Xhezair Zaganjori, which was given yesterday
by the governing majority, was not sent to Parliament since it did not
receive the consensus of the opposition. In the procedural session, both
parties accused each other of failing to reach the consensus.
Prime Minister Sali Berisha declared that the majority is decided to give the presidential post to someone with high integrity.
Berisha underlined that this is his only goal, and in full accordance with the Constitution, the majority has agreed with the Socialist Movement for Integration for this name.
“We implemented the Constitution’s interests, as the Socialist Party and their leader demanded”, Berisha declared.
“They asked to have a president that can be voted with qualified majority, because it is on the interest of every citizen to se as President someone with the widest support. Based on this constitutional obligation, we started the consultations without mentioning any name, because we wanted the consultations to continue with the opposition, and this is necessary”, Berisha declared.
The Prime Minister mentioned the four conditions set by the opposition, which he considers as ultimatums. Berisha declared that the negotiation scheme of five years ago will not be repeated.
The PM declared that the majority brought a candidate that did not derive from politics, but who served to the country and nation in full independence.
“If you don’t want to block the integration process, then tell us what’s wrong with this candidate”, the Prime Minister told the opposition MPs.
The Socialist Movement for Integration leader, Ilir Meta, spoke with a quieter tone:
“I value the commitment of the majority to open this process, although delayed, and liberate it from excessive politicization that had started in the last three months and for giving the country a president that unites us even more. There is a proposition for a concrete candidate (Xhezair Zaganjori) and I believe that the majority has given a standard for the qualities of the new president”, Meta declared.
Berisha’s main government ally said that this political momentum should be valued, because the qualities of the candidate are very serious.
“A successful solution for the presidential candidate would help for other reforms too”, Meta declared.
The Parliamentary Group leader, Socialist Gramoz Ruci, declared that the opposition hopes and believes that there will be a consensual process for the election of the new President.
“The opposition will be in its mission in every other round after this one that failed for you fault, because it is never too late to establish a process”, Ruci declared in the plenary session where the first voting for the president will be realized.
According to Ruci, the same situation happened even in 2007, with the same director that produced the same comedy.
“We offered our agreement to see beyond close party interests. You cannot chose your adversary in democracy. The others chose him and you are obliged to cooperate. The dialogue is held with the adversaries, the process is made with the opposition, the consensus is made with the adversaries”, Ruci declared.
