The President of Albania, Bujar Nishani, addressed the Parliament with a
letter, expressing his concern for the budget for the army in 2017.
“Even this year, the budget doesn’t reflect the serious concerns established by our strategic allies and the partner countries of the biggest political and military alliance we are part of”, Nishani says in his letter addressed to the Parliament.
The President said the Ministry of Defense has not been consulted for this draft-budget, but based on the information shown on the Parliament’s official website, the obligation with 2% of the GDP is not only not met, but the budget has been reduced with much more.
“The document for the Strategic Defense Review after 2015 must not be less than 1.5% of the GDP. The one planned for 2017 is half of this ojbective. My concern is that the defense draft-budget for 2017 is much lower, almost 2.8 times lower than the 2% of the GDP, which is what was singed for between the NATO members in Warsaw, Poland”, Nishani said.
