In Tirana, right on the road that had a roadblock for common citizens
and allowed inside only the communist leaders, today there is a
post-modern art installation made of three objects, symbol of the
dictatorial regime in Albania and Eastern Germany.

A bunker was built where the roadblock used to be, together with a colon from the notorious Spac prison, and some part of the Berlin wall. These are three objects with which authors Fatos Lubonja, a former political prisoner, and Ardian Isufi, created the “Postblock” memorial.

A work of art that the Albanians have not had in these two decades, and through which the authors aim to preserve in the national memory the most tragic part of Albania’s modern history.

Fatos Lubonja was too excited to hold a long speech, and he only declared that this work was a dedication to the people who did not have the chance to overcome the dictatorship era and live the time we live today”, Lubonja declared.

Parliament Speaker Jozefina Topalli, a former politically persecuted, who had relatives at the Spac prison, declared that this prison was the place of barbarities, a name that she had heard in her young age, because it was the place where her parents were suffering.

For the German ambassador, which made possible the transportation of the Berlin Wall piece to Tirana, and for Prime Minister Sali Berisha, the memorial is a good motivation for building the future, by not forgetting the tragic past of the two countries.

“For the last 26 years, since the diplomatic connection between the two countries, together with Albania we have wanted to be agents of change, since the refugee crisis. I guarantee that we will remain agents of change in Albania to reach our common Europe”, declared Ambassador Holtkemper.

“In history, the past serves to project a better and safer future, and that’s why we Albanians have more reasons to remember our past and build the future that we deserve”, Berisha declared.
