Linda Rama: Between Family, Work and Albania’s Future The government has officially admitted that the crisis has increased the
number of poor people in Albania. Official data from the Ministry of
Labor show that the number of families that need economic help has
reached 104.000 or 7000 more than in 2010.
Compared to 2008, before the crisis started, the number of families in need increased with 10.700. The poor people are the class that is suffering the hardest hit from the economic crisis, due to the Albanian families’ revenues structure. A World Bank survey indicated that there are 180.000 families benefiting from remittances.
The survey says that without this revenue, 40% of them would be living in extreme poverty. In villages, where poverty is higher, the remittances are vital, making 66% of the revenues for the families that have relatives working in emigration.
In the first six months of this year, according to official data, the emigrants have sent 75 million EUR less than the same period of 2009. This 18% shrink in a very short time is making the families return under the claws of extreme poverty.
