The Albanian Minister of Innovation, Genc Pollo declared that he is not
the one who gave himslef the competences attributed by the new law.
During an interview for Voice of America, Pollo underlined that the new law was created by the Albanian Parliament, an institution that has asked his opinion afterwards.
“The draft-law for the media has not been prepared by me or by the government, but by the Parliamentary Commission of Media, which asked our opinion. The competences are attributed to the Minister by the Constitution and no one else. These comments come from the lack of knowledge about laws”, Pollo declared.
As for the law on population registration on religious and ethnic bases, Pollo specified that this is a very important law for the country.
The minister added that the law guarantees the security of personal data and gives to the citizens the right to not answer to the questions about ethnicity and religion.
“The law, the census, was approved and this very important process will start this October. This process, which is made in cooperation with the European Union, is held every 10 years. We have a modernized legal base, which guarantees that the personal data will be reserved in secrecy”, Pollo declared.
“As for the questions about ethnicity and religion, if one citizen will be asked about this, he has the constitutional right to not respond. These data were collected when Albania was a monarchy and in a communist dictatorship. I don’t see why they should not be collected in democracy”, Pollo added.
