The Alliance Against Waste Import asked IRDA to hold a poll in 600
families, and take the opinion of their major-aged members about the
Waste Import law.

At least 78.4% of the persons that were interviewed by IRDA have opposed the law.

“78% of the people who declared that they would vote in the referendum declared that they will oppose the waste import. Only 9.2% of them will vote in favor of the import. The other 6.3% will not vote in the referendum, while 6.2% are not sure”, declared Ermal Cela from IDRA.

82% of the interviewed were informed about the Waste Import Law, and the citizens of the Albanian capital had good knowledge. 70% of the interviewed admitted that this law allows the waste import, and 80% of them have specified that the waste import is a significant matter for our country and their life. The company that studied the market declared that the margin of error is only 4%.

Waste Import referendum

The Alliance Against Waste Import started the campaign for collecting the 50.000 signatures needed for a referendum that could undo the Waste Import law.

“We, the citizens, are facing today an historical moment in which we will apply direct democracy through a referendum, for a matter that belongs to all of us, left and right oriented and even impartial citizens. We invite you to protect our life and that of the future generations by signing this referendum”, declared Aldo Merkoci from “Mjaft” (Enough) Movement.

The representatives of this Alliance declared that they will collect the signatures in different cities of the country until February.

“The goal of this referendum is to say ‘no’ to the foreign waste import law. Let us guarantee the implementation of the law for managing our wastes, which is not affected at all by removing the three articles that we pretend to remove. Our request will be approved after we collect 50.000 signatures from the Albanian citizens”, Kozara Kati declared, representative of the Alliance against Waste Import.

After collecting 50.000 signatures, the Central Election Commission will have to decide for the Referendum through which the Albanians will vote if foreign wastes should be imported or not.
