The former political prisoners ended the hunger strike that today marked
its 31st day. Through a press release, the hunger strike
representatives declared that their requests for compensation are not
over.

They feel disappointed by the indifference of the institutions and declared that Prime Minister’s Berisha declaration that the strike is politically motivated is unjust.

On the last days, the strikers expressed their concern for the police taking off their fluids, a concern also shared by the Ombudsman.

“We thank the citizens, the media, the medical teams and our international partners for the support. We want our demands to be taken in consideration and for this we want the help of the ambassadors accredited here”, the strikers declared.

The strike coordinator, Skender Tufa, asked for support from the civil society, the citizens and not from politics, asking that this issue should be solved according to the law.

“The human rights and freedoms are being violated in Albania. Some politicians have offended the former political prisoners”, Tufa declared.

The political prisoners’ odyssey

A former political prisoners has been going from office to office in the Tirana Court, trying to restore his real surname. Xhetan Ceku, 67, was born in internment and has never known his real father, who was killed after caught trying to escape.

This man has been wandering in courts for four years, to confirm that he is the son of Avdul Ceku, but his surname in papers has been changed to Osmani, Hamiti and Destani.

This is the third time that this man has opened a trial to correct and confirm his surname, so that he can receive his compensation as a persecuted person of the regime. He accuses the courts of intentionally delaying his efforts.
