Police secures Dutch Embassy after notification for protest

The Dutch Embassy was secured by the Albanian Police today, after receiving notification for a protest.

The notification had come from civil society members, who wanted to protest Netherlands’ decision to impose a visa regime on Albanian citizens for the Schengen area.

This is not the first time that the Netherlands tries to stop Albania’s processes with the EU. Last year they started an initiative to veto the EU accession negotiations, and in 2013 many MPs also called for vetoing Albania’s EU candidate status.

The Albanian Prime Minister, Edi Rama, said that the motion voted by the Dutch Parliament is caused by Netherland’s internal elections, and that the EU will not remove Albania’s right to travel visa-free to the Schengen Area.
