Albanian Prime Minister Edi Rama gave a public statement a few hours after the Assembly voted in favor of removing the mandate of MP Arben Ahmetaj, paving the way for his arrest following the request of the SPAK special anti-corruption prosecution.
Rama said that Ahmetaj is the highest official for whom SPAK demands the arrest after the investigations, as he praized the justice reform, which he said he supported from the beginning.
“Today we voted on the request by the prosecutor’s office to authorize the arrest of a deputy, who has covered important duties in our governments, as a minister and deputy prime minister.
“This senior Albanian official that ended up in the investigation network of SPAK, it was another test for us, as the initiators of the Reform in Justice.
The Prime Minister further said that “in front of the Albanians who have trusted him to vote, he does not agree with anyone who puts their hands in their pockets”.
The Assembly voted today with 117 votes in favor of the removal of the mandate of former energy minister Arben Ahmetaj, paving the way for his arrest for corruption in the infamous case of incinerators.
Ahmetaj’s location was not known until now, but his lawyer Henrik Ligori announced that he is in England, near his daughter.
SPAK declares that it has collected evidence showing that the former Minister of Finance committed corruption in six cases. The most flagrant example is related to the traces left on the computer of Klodian Zoto, wanted and accused of stealing funds of the incinerators, who paid for trips to the former minister and his wife in several states.
The other five corruption cases are kept secret by SPAK as they say, there are other people under investigation.
