From the Summit of the Atlantic Council for Energy and Economy, held in
Istanbul and that serves as a platform for coordinating the strategic,
political and energetic economies, PM Edi Rama spoke about the
objectives of the Albanian government in this sector.
“The constant efforts of the government have produced a spectacular transformation in only two years. The payment collection level is now 100%. Losses have dropped dramatically. For the first time in the past 25 years, the Albanian Company of Energy Distribution has registered operative profits in 2015, making it possible to start investing in the system. Our purpose is to transform the energy sector, this huge burden of the budget, into a self-sustaining and even profitable sector within 2018”, Rama declared.
Rama said that Albania is diversifying and consolidating its energy position in the region.
“The TAP pipeline will bring Caspian gas from the fields of Azerbaijan and to the EU through Albania. This will put our country for the first time in the center of the geostrategic policy of the EU. The conclusion of TAP, the Ionian-Adriatic project, with new discoveries in the Mediterranean, might turn Israel and Cyprus into the newest suppliers of gas for EU. That would make Albania in the long-term”, Rama underlined.
The PM met with the Turkish President, Recep Tayyip Erdogan. The Prime Minister’s press office says they discussed about the energy situation in the region, as part of the joint challenge against terrorism, and the Syrian refugee crisis.
