The Prime Minister of Kosovo, Albin Kurti, has given details about the agreement reached last night for the de-escalation of the situation in the north of Kosovo.
In his address before the meeting of the Government of Kosovo, Kurti said that through Monday’s agreement in Bratislava, 25 percent of the police presence in and around municipal facilities in the north will be moved elsewhere where they are needed, in the same municipalities.
He also agreed to hold new elections in the 4 northern municipalities.
According to him, this is happening because in the last two weeks the situation in the municipality of Zvecan, Zubin Potok and Leposaviq has been much calmer. Meanwhile, he emphasized the need for the full implementation of the Kosovo-Serbia basic agreement.
“Deputy Prime Minister Bislimi has reached an agreement with the emissary of the European Union Lajcak on these points. First, the Government of Kosovo publicly shows its willingness to contribute to the de-escalation of the situation and not to take steps that could escalate the situation in the north of the country.
“Secondly, the Kosovo Police, along with the EULEX and KFOR forces, will assess the security situation as needed, in particular to look at the possibility of further reducing the police presence in and around municipal buildings. This was our request from the beginning, since we see the rule of law and peace and security as a common interest of all parties,” he said.
Also, Kurti underlined that they support holding new elections in the four northern municipalities, but according to the legislation in force and after the summer season.
“The Government of Kosovo through a public statement supports the holding of early elections in the 4 municipalities in the north of the country and that after the summer season and in full compliance with the legal framework. But in order to achieve this, an environment must be created which enables genuine campaigning, political pluralism, the participation of local communities and which guarantees the inviolability of the vote.
“In this context, the importance that the government gives to the rule of law in each part of the country should be understood. We cannot compromise with the rule of law, as it would undermine democracy. The fourth is about the invitation that the EU will send to the two chief negotiators”, Kurti added.
