Parties debate for CEC chairman

A new conflict has been created between the two main parties’
representatives, Damian Gjiknuri and Ilir Rusmali, for the election of
the new Chairman of the Central Election Commission.

The Commission of laws gathered to review the candidacies brought by small parties, such as SMI and UHRP, for the election of the CEC Chairman.

The Democratic Chairman of the Commission of Laws, Ilir Rusmali, asked the MPs to choose one of the candidates so that he could pass in today’s Parliament session. The Socialists refused and MP Gjiknuri said that the Electoral Code foresees a hearing session with the candidates and that the CEC Chairman is elected 10 days after the new members of this institution are approved.

The debates between Gjiknuri and Rusmali went beyond ethics, almost ending up to a physical confrontation. The Commission of Laws session was interrupted and Rusmali promised to take disciplinary measures against Gjiknuri.

The SP representative declared for Top Channel that the personal debates do not matter and that the majority is trying to undermine the process for creating a professional Central Election Commission.

“This unilateral decision was refused by us, because today’s session could not treat the Chairman of the CEC, since the SP needs time for this issue. We need a special session for this and I proposed to set a date at the Commission of Laws, so that we can review the documentation and proceed with the election. They refused this and insisted to conclude it today. This is illegal and dangerous, because it will cast shadows of doubt since the beginning”, Gjiknuri declared.

The majority declared for the media that they had no declaration for this issue.
