Parliament approves fiscal pardon

The Parliament approved with 74 votes in favor the law of fiscal amnesty, which pardons delayed individual and business debts and also the legalization of undeclared properties.

The opposition did not participate and the deputies explained the reasons.

“The opposition demands a real amnesty, and not an electoral one. This law was passed two weeks before local elections only for electoral purposes. You ignored the opposition and the international community”, said SP Deputy Mimi Kodheli.

The Minister of Finances, Ridvan Bode, claimed that the amnesty has no electoral purposes, because this law has been discussed for two years.

“We have invited Opposition representatives in commerce chambers and common dialogue tables”, Bode declared.

The Opposition strongly doubts that the consequences of this law that the government chose to pass in the midst of an electoral campaign. But Prime Minister Berisha emphasized that this amnesty excludes money that comes from crime and drug traffic.

On the Socialist Parliamentary Group behalf, Deputy Mimi Kodheli requested the government to not rush with the approval of the law before discussing it widely for the public.

“We propose to return the law for a comprehensive and transparent discussion. We invite you to come and discuss for such an important process”, Kodheli declared.

But the Opposition’s request for postponing the draft was not taken under consideration. The government voted the law unilaterally. Beyond the opposition and majority diversities, what attracted the attention during this parliamentary session was the softer stance of the Parliament Speaker, the behavior of whom has frequently been criticized by the opposition and in many cases has been the source of harsh debates on the Parliament floor. Mrs. Topalli was more careful this time and treated the opposition and majority equally, not hesitating to even interrupt the speech of important government figures.

US ambassador, Alexander Arvizu, was also present to have a closer look to the parliamentary session.
