Top Channel has exclusively learned from diplomatic sources in Tirana
that the Socialist Party MP, Pandeli Majko, expects to be elected as
General Secretary of the UN for Europe and former Soviet Countries.

The same sources confirmed that Mr. Majko is at thee same time a possible candidate for the post of the vice UN General Secretary.

Majko’s commitments for the new duty explain his absence in the Parliament voting for the head of the Supreme State Audit, a voting that the opposition called a political decision.

Sources say that the candidacy of the former Prime Minister for this high UN duty  was not proposed by Albanian institutions.

In a phone conversation, Majko declared for Top Channel that he is aware that his name, as Albanian, has been taken in consideration for a possible candidacy at the UN, for assistant of the UN General Secretary for Europe, former Soviet countries and the Caucasus. This position has been kept by Serbia until now.

Pandeli Majko has been an MP of the Albanian Parliament for the last 20 years. In 1999, when he was a Prime Minister, he managed the situation during the Kosovo War. Then he became Minister of Defense, and during the years he has been one of the main figures of the Socialist Party.
