The European MP, Doris Pack, is another member of the international
community that criticizes the Albanian Prime Minister, Sali Berisha, for
replacing the Central Election Commission member proposed by the
Socialist Movement for Integration.
In an interview for Top Channel Pack says that this move is at least unnecessary, and that the Central Election Commission should be “healed” with the help of the international community, not only to guarantee the independence of this institution, but also to remove the thoughts of incorrect elections.
Doris Pack: First of all, we should see that this institution remains independent. It doesn’t matter how it was voted in the past, and what majority voted, because the members are voted for several years. For me it was necessary to change the Central Election Commission, because it is an independent institution and it should remain as such.
Top Channel: You have advised and defended the Albanian Prime Minister, Sali Berisha, even in harder times. What is your advise and how can this situation change?
Doris Pack: First of all, I never advise a Prime Minister, not in Albania and not in any other country. I give an answer if I am asked about something, and no one asked me this time. I am saying what I would say. If I was in power, I would not have done this, because it would be unnecessary and damages the Central Election Commission. I hope that this Commission will get “healed”.
Top Channel: Do you think that we can have free and fair elections with this Central Election Commission?
Doris Pack: I hope that the issue of the Central Election Commission will be “healed” through some way or another, maybe through the international community that lives in Albania by helping the government and the opposition to find a solution. I hope that they will help with this.
