When just two years have passed since the adoption of the law on the recognition of pensioner status for foreign citizens, nearly three thousand Italian pensioners have been registered as residents in Albania.
As Portugal recently announced the cancellation of tax exemptions for foreign pensioners starting in 2024, Albania seems to be becoming the new haven for European senior citizens.
Italian media write that this approved permit offers attractive opportunities for Italians, as they enjoy a number of benefits, including exemption from taxation as well as low living costs, and also the few documents that an Italian senior needs to obtain the permit.
They only needs proof of the criminal record and proof of pension revenue. But to be equipped with this permit, the only condition is that the minimum pension received is 1,000 euros. Permits for this category, are granted with a 1-year term with the right of renewal, provided that stable income is proven.
The residence permit for pensioners does not give the foreigners the right to carry out any type of economic or professional activity in the Republic of Albania.
